Concept note
Varanasi is a major religious hub in India. For Hindus, it is considered the holiest city with millions of pilgrims visiting every year.
The symbol is a combination of mythology and Varanasi's architecture. The layers of continuous lines suggest the downward steps seen on the ghats as well as on the walls, windows and doors of houses and temples in the city. The upper arch of the symbol is similar to the arches seen on the forts of Varanasi.
Inside the symbol, the larger petal pointing upwards suggests the third eye of Goddess Ganga.
A lotus is always present with the Goddess hence a lotus plant supporting the eye.
The colour is inspired from Varanasi’s striking usage of Cerulean blue on walls, windows and doors throughout the city. The gradient that gets darker towards the petals represents the deep rooted spirituality of Varanasi and the importance of the river Ganga to the city.
The colours are slighty saturated to suggest Varanasi’s existence since ancient times.
